Vehicle History
On November 8, 2018, in Butte County in Northern California, a fire started that would become the largest and most destructive wildfire in the state’s history. Over 17 days, the Camp Fire in Paradise, California would claim 86 lives and injure many more. It covered an area of 153,336 acres (almost 240 square miles), and destroyed 18,804 structures. Most of the damage occurred in the first four hours. It was not until November 25 that the fire was 100 percent contained. This 1973 FJ40 Land Cruiser was purchased new by former Butte County Sheriff Scott Mackenzie and is a tragic example of what the Paradise community went through. Mr. Mackenzie named the vehicle Tojo after Japanese General, Hideki Tojo.
The Land Cruiser Heritage Museum is grateful to Mr. Mackenzie and his family for the donation of this vehicle. It is our hope that it will serve as a reminder of how quickly things we cherish can be taken from us, thereby increasing our appreciation for them.
History
After achieving an international reputation with the J2/J3, Toyota embarked on a redesign process that resulted in an iconic look that would define Land Cruiser for the next two decades. Initially, theJ4 offered a slightly different wheelbase than the previous production model.
By the end of the production run, the J4 models boasted four different wheelbase lengths. There was a “short” length, similar to the original model and typically sporting a soft top. The “medium” model was used for a short-lived station wagon model that was replaced by a different model after a few years. The “long” wheelbase model also had a short life as it was supplanted by the wildly popular “super long” wheelbase. The “super long” started out as a troop transport, but became popular in rural areas throughout Africa, Australia, the Americas and Asia, where they were used for camping, public transportation, and more. Most people who fell in love with the Land Cruiser fell in love with a J4
